About the Position

The Village Administrator serves as the Chief Administrative Officer of New Glarus, overseeing daily operations under the direction of the Village Board. This role involves managing administrative activities, including implementing Board policies, preparing budgets, supervising personnel, and maintaining compliance with ordinances and state statutes. The Village Administrator ensures effective communication with citizens, addresses concerns, and represents the Village in legislative and intergovernmental affairs. An ideal candidate will have experience with strategic planning, government budgeting, and possess the ability to build partnerships while fostering organizational efficiency and community engagement.

About the Community

The Village of New Glarus (population 2,348) was established as a Swiss Colony in 1845 and incorporated as a Village in 1901. Known as America’s Little Switzerland, New Glarus embraces its rich Swiss heritage with Alpine-style architecture, cultural museums (Swiss Historical Village Museum and Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum), ethnic festivals such as the Wilhelm Tell Festival and Polkafest, and artisan shops and restaurants. 

Located 28 miles south of Madison in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area—a region known for its unique topography, including steep hills, valleys, and a rich landscape that was never smoothed by glacial activity—New Glarus is offers an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities.  The Village is the starting point for the 24-mile Sugar River Bike Trail and home to the 435-acre New Glarus Woods State Park, offering camping, hiking, picnicking and snowshoeing.

In 2024, the New Glarus School District scored at the top of Green and Dane Counties, and #12 in the state for 4K-12 districts. The local economy is thriving and supported by tourism, agriculture, small businesses, and light manufacturing. New Glarus is also home to the world-famous New Glarus Brewing Company.

The Ideal Candidate

The Village Board seeks a candidate that processes strong leadership and communication skills, with a proven ability to drive economic development initiatives that support the Village’s growth and vibrance. An ideal candidate will exhibit a genuine interest in engaging with the residents and businesses, building relationships, and actively engaging in community activities and organizations.

Salary Range: $90,000 - $100,000 (DOQ)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public administration or closely-related field of study.

  • Experience in municipal government management, preferably with direct practice in community and economic development.

  • Supervisory experience.
