About the Community
The Village of New Glarus (population 2,348) was established as a Swiss Colony in 1845 and incorporated as a Village in 1901. Known as America’s Little Switzerland, New Glarus embraces its rich Swiss heritage with Alpine-style architecture, cultural museums (Swiss Historical Village Museum and Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum), ethnic festivals such as the Wilhelm Tell Festival and Polkafest, and artisan shops and restaurants.
Located 28 miles south of Madison in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area—a region known for its unique topography, including steep hills, valleys, and a rich landscape that was never smoothed by glacial activity—New Glarus offers an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities. The Village is the starting point for the 24-mile Sugar River Bike Trail and home to the 435-acre New Glarus Woods State Park, offering camping, hiking, picnicking and snowshoeing.
Housing options range from charming historic homes to new residential developments. In 2024, the New Glarus School District scored at the top of Green and Dane Counties, and #12 in the state for 4K-12 districts. The local economy is thriving and supported by tourism, agriculture, small businesses, and light manufacturing.
