About the Position

The Village of Sussex (population 12,162) is a vibrant and growing community located in the heart of Waukesha County. The Village of Sussex is seeking a dynamic Public Works Director/Village Engineer to lead and manage its Public Works Department. This department oversees three utilities—water, sewer, and stormwater—and provides essential services, including operations, building maintenance, and engineering. As a key member of the Village’s management team, the ideal candidate will be a strong, collaborative leader with excellent customer service skills. This position offers the opportunity to shape the role and contribute meaningfully to a growing, vibrant community.

Current and Upcoming Projects

  • The Public Works Director/Village Engineer will lead the construction of a pavilion to replace an existing park shelter that will have a large outdoor area with a covered stage as well as indoor rental space.

  • The Public Works Director/Village Engineer will oversee the reconstruction of Weaver Drive from The Grove (splash pad) to The Ridge.

  • Using funds awarded by a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Public Works Director/Village Engineer will oversee the Corky Curtis Trail extension project, including the design and engineering of a trail connection from Silver Spring Drive to the stream crossing. The project also includes the construction of a stream crossing over the existing Spring Creek.

  • The Public Works Director/Village Engineer will manage the construction of a stormwater pond in the area of the central diamond/V2 (near The Ridge) to provide water quality control for the park.

  • The Public Works Director/Village Engineer will oversee the construction of a new park maintenance facility as part of The Ridge at Village Park project.

2025 is an exciting year for the Village of Sussex’s parks system—and particularly for the Director of Public Works/Village Engineer—with the construction of The Ridge at Village Park, a new park maintenance facility, reconstruction of Weaver Drive from The Grove (splash pad) to The Ridge, and construction of a stormwater pond in the area of the central diamond/V2. This phase of the Village Park Master Plan aims for completion by July 1, 2026.

The Ideal Candidate

The Village of Sussex seeks a candidate with strong leadership and communication skills, and a proven ability to manage public works operations and engineering projects that support the Village’s infrastructure and growth.

Starting Range: $120,000-$145,000 (DOQ)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Wisconsin Licensed Municipal Engineer certification.

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (Master’s degree in Public Administration or a related field is preferred).

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering, public works management, and/or municipal operations, including project administration and supervision.

  • A valid driver’s license.
